How big a hole in the ice do I need to keep koi healthy? Zone 5 - 5000 gallons?
I have a 5000 gallon, EPDM lined pond in my backyard. I know I need to keep an air hole in the ice to let the gasses escape. I purchased a Thermo Pond 3.0 floating de-icer which has kept a nice hole open in 4" of ice. I was surprised to read in the instructions that I should have one de-icer for every 1000 gallons of pond water. Why? If it is just to let the gasses escape, why would I need more than one hole in the ice?
Details:
Pond is mostly 2 feet deep. 20 x 14 feet wide.
6000 gallons with 6 koi.
I expect the ice to stay for 2 to 3 months. (Zone 5).
Do I need multiple holes in the ice? Or do I need one hole with a minimum size???

I have a koi pond in my backyard too, but four feet deep. we usually keep a 10 inch hole in the ice. The hole is to supply the pond with oxygen for your koi to breathe, not necessarily to get gas escape. I would recommend keeping a bigger hole and checking on your koi often, because two feet is a fairly shallow pond, and if too thick of an ice layer forms, your koi will have no space to swim. There are other ways to make holes in ice, like pouring boiling hot water on the ice or by drilling or cutting holes, as long as they don't freeze back up.
From my experience, your one hole should be ok if the ice doesn't thicken.
