I use only a HPS, and it is suitable for "needy" plants such as tomatoes, peppers, etc. Many people like the idea of being able to switch from MH and HPS, but I have never found it necessary.
Even though MH has the blue spectrum which encourages compact growth, and HPS with the red spectrum for flowering and fruiting, I find that I don't need the MH. Whether I am putting an existing plant into growth, or a new seedling, a few days at 20/4 to 24/0 and a week or two at 18/6 is generally fine, and then switch to 12/12 for flowering/fruiting. I actually have a couple of plants that are four years old and I put them through four cycles per year.
